Eder is the eldest of three children, with a six year old sister and a four year old brother. His father, Pedro, is a bricklayer who earns very little money, and his mother weaves Mayan fabrics in her spare time in order to contribute the family’s income, which is not sufficient to keep the children in school. Eder’s parents are already considering removing him from school so that he can work, which would prevent him from obtaining the skills necessary to find better employment than his father, and continue the cycle of poverty.

Eder really enjoys mathematics, computer classes and, like most other boys, football. Next year he will attend fourth year of secondary school in Solola because his favorite profession is sport, which is not available in San Pedro to study. For his parents to send Eder to another city it is too expensive for them because they are still supporting his other brothers who are also attending school.

This school holiday he will work a lot to save money for the next year when he goes to Solola city. Eder follows his father to work. Leaving at 7 o’clock in the morning, he doesn’t usually return until after 4 pm.
