Pedro is the second oldest of five children. His father is an unemployed alcoholic who drinks daily. Pedro’s mother works very hard selling used clothing to support the family. Because his mother is always working, Pedro and the other children usually have to cook and care for themselves. Because of their economic situation, Pedro’s mother doesn’t think that she will be able to send all of the children to school. When Pedro’s mother tells him he may not be able to attend school, he cries.Pedro is now in secondary school and is succeeding. Pedro and his two other brothers attend to the secondary school too. For their mother it is very expensive to support them. |

Pedro likes to study and wants to have a good job in the future to be able to help his other brothers. |
| Other Activities
During vacations from school Pedro works harvesting coffee. He works from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. cutting and carrying heavy bags of coffee down the steep mountainside using a traditional Mayan headstrap. For his work, Pedro earns about $2.00 USD per day, which he gives to his mother to help support the family. |
